Just thought I would start this new month off. Glad everyone is busy with preserving all the goodies from their gardens. It was 44 this morning, fall is here.

Yep, 50* 3 mornings in a row, some maples are changing. Made 3 gallons of sauce today, and a buttload of breaded eggplant. Froze half and made 4 parms. Gonna can the remaining sauce shortly. Great day. Have fun you all.

NO DAMAGE TO THE PROPERTY!!! WoooHooooo!! Everything looked great!. One problem we have is that 6 bears have taken up residence on the land and because of this, they carry back all the trash bags they steal to the land. I have given many people permission to thin them out when the season starts. Had an awesome time at camp with the kids and all their friends. The storm sure did change some of the rivers nearby, so today we took advantage of that and went gold panning. We found a LOT of flour gold, and several pickers, one guy found a nugget the size of a marble! We also found many garnets too.

We went to Canelo Cowboy Church's service this morning. They held it on the Santa Cruz County fairgrounds. Then we went to the rodeo afterward. We had a good day and enjoyed each others company. Tomorrow I'm hoping to do the light work that I had planned yesterday but didn't get done.... yesterday was kind of a fiasco.

Somewhere on our land or very close there must be a cave or something. One of the neighbors said he was going by and saw a mother and two cubs and three other bears on our road at the same time tearing up trash bags that they had drug in there.

One of the neatest things I've ever seen was a mamma bear with 4 cubs trailing her as she ran from woods to woods while I stood in an open air milking parlor milking cows about 8 years ago. ~Martin

I was face to face with three of them while mushroom huntin, and we have had them in the yard before, a couple years ago a mother and 4 cubs. I don't dislike bears, as long as they stay in the woods, and are not tearing up my yard. There shouldn't be any bears there next season, we gave enough permissions to people that they will either shoot them or scare them off to an area where they won't be dodging lead. The amount of deer and moose droppings on the property is amazing.

Wayne, I'm really glad to hear things are A-OK up in NH! Sounds like you will have some good hunting in the future with those droppings! I've got my vegi soup in the canner right now-7 qts-so I should have about 20 when I'm done-gonna buy a ham when they go on sale-which should be soon-and make ham and pea soup. I also made 7 qts of tomato sauce yesterday and 11 pints of spaghetti sauce. I have a turkey to put in soon-just a 15 pounder. I'm cleaning out the freezer.

I brought up about 50 big tomatoes from the garden, everyone went crazy over them. I think I will be able to shoot meat from the front porch Julie I could care less about being sporting, I don't hunt for that purpose, I hunt for meat, the easiest way is the best way.

Wayne, it will be so great when you can finally live on your new homestead. Nothing better than fresh wild game, I grew up on it. My elderly neighbor has a peach tree that had fruit the size of apricots on it, she let me pick a sack full. Made 5 pints of pickled peaches for my stepmom, and two peach cobblers-gave on to the neighbor for letting me pick the peaches. went up the Poudre canyon and picked enough chokecherries for 2 1/2 quarts of juice to use to make jelly and syrup this fall. I am slowly getting back into canning, try to do a little every couple of days when I can get things to put up.

Having been a beekeeper for 30+ years, my overall experience with bears hasn't been good.....too many of them around here. We've had them in the yard and on the porch several times.

Laurie,
That is so good that you are still reclaiming your life. Every time you post something like this it brings a smile to my face, you are a constant inspiration to keep fighting.
Martin, Like I said, I don't dislike bears particularly, but once they invade my space they become targets.
