This is my favorite way to do business. I helped a fiend by teaching him how to lay ceramic tile, and of course, grouting. Maybe 6 hours, and half that wAs on the phone. He shows up the next week with a Mosin- Nagant and 440 rounds of ammo! The rifle is fresh out of the cosmoline and the bore is fantastic. Last week I helped him tile his kitchen backsplash, and swapped for a scoped 10/22. ( sighs of contentment )
any of you into this too?

Rick, I am all about bartering. I love to get something I need for something I don't need, at the same time knowing that what I'm trading will benefit someone else in their endeavors. Example, much of my electrical was done by me, but a lot of it was also done by a friend of mine that I did a bunch of database and network work for.

Rick, I've been thinking for quite awhile about getting a Mosin. If you are interested, I'll provide you a how to link to put a long eye relief (handgun) scope on a Mosin. That way you don't gotta mess with the straight bolt handle.
Some lefties (me) work the bolt on a Mosin with their left hand rather than their right, and the LER scope allows much more room for that. I'm told that to scope one normally is a PITA, and expensive too. And they are far to accurate to not put glass on. With that super clean bore, that thing should be a tack driver. Really ! $100 excellent sniper rifle !

Rick, the scope doohinkus linkus sounds great. Thanks. Originally, i was going to use this rifle for a nasty weather deer gun. I went out and bought some hunting rounds and took out for a test run. Sandbagged, bench, piece of cake, right? Thats when i dicovered its a looooong way between those sights for my eyes. The front sight kept getting blurry. I grab a carbine, good to go. Weird!?! So, yea a scope is gonna happen. rocksolidind.com/Mosin%20Nagant.html. If that worked, not only will it be a miracle, lol, but the mods they do are very cool.

On a surplus coulda shoulda woulda side note, back in '88, I was offered a crate of Ak's for $1200. I believe it was for 12. I had the cash in my pocket, but didnt do it. Couple days later i went back. He was sold out. If memory serves me, he was getting$168 apiece back then. Apparently I sucked at math back then! I saw/ fondled one a few weeks ago and groaned again at my lack of foresight. Young, dumb and ...numb as a pounded thumb.

That's basically how we built our house-the parts that we didn't do ourselves we either bartered, scrounged or traded labor. Worked out real well!

Sure did wanna see that link but all I get is; "page cannot be found". Ya think it's my machinery or yours ? Now, eyes. I used to have some. Shot a lot in comp. both mil. and civ. Open sights got harder and harder, just like you said. I finally discovered something, a cheap pair of weak "readers" (half glasses) was just the ticket, Shazammm I could now see BOTH front and rear sights and the target as well. Unkle Sam spoiled me though on long guns, I want glass on every one of them but one carbine for beating up. Or like you say, bad weather. If it's my long gun, it's gotta go out to at least 6 or 800 yds with a high degree of accuracy, or I don't want it. My pride n joy used to be Tompson Contenders, with LER glass and 14" bbl's. but (sigh) they're all gone now.

That would have been some deal allright. 12 for 12 ....Wow ! What if you had them now ? I remember though, prolly before you were born, an AK went for milsurp $84 !! You believe that ?

Thanks, i post on an iphone. Its made in china and it knows i hate its communist guts. I've had it paste right only once, that onion/ bs thing. Frankly, i have more fun following the links Rick puts up. More educayshunal! This week, my chicom POS wont link with the wifi. My gf's laptop has no problem. Nearest At&t store is over 2 hours south. Makes me wonder.... Betcha I set this phone on a stump out a ways, wonder what that 7.62 by 54r would do to it? Now THAT thought makes me smile! Probably see the target no problem. Lol Rick, I could never ever, in a million years shoot out to 600 yards. All my guns that could shoot that far are gone, but my talent was never that good. I did have a .220 swift #1 i was pretty good with. Never learned to reload, and $2.00+ to pull the trigger once didnt give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. Probably lots more money these days. As far as cheap AK's go.... Same with m1 carbines at that time, too. My dad was a tank mechanic in the Korean war. They wouldnt let him have a garand. A garand and a 14, I'd be a happy man. My friends let me shoot theirs once in a blue moon, but i have room for my own. Just lacking..... About 4 grand. Lmao.

Loved that Garand too. My battle group commander wouldn't let them take away our garands to be replaced with 14's so I never tried one. They developed an early problem jamming from dirt, and he said NOPE, keep 'em. That ole garand went where you told it. First time, every time. Clean, dirty, wet, dry, froze, hot 'r cold. You and 600; Gimmie that Mosin with a Burris LER 4-12 glass, and in two hours you will be in a 10" bull all day long - Guarnteeed ! iphone onna stump ! Tha'd be fuun ! ;D

Just noticed Chloes post. I traded my four smelly goats last week. Meat cutter said sometimes the meat can taste off when they smell 'funky' now, was i going to spend another $240 on proccessing and not be happy? The answer would be NO. I could have brought them to auction, drive them in my short bus. Meatcutter offered me what i had in them, so i took the deal. I got over an acre of land chewed down to nubs for free. Next year, its Boer's, and they will get wethered, except one breeder buck. In the late fall/ early winter find 2 does and away we go. I'll make sure I'll have enough hay bartered for at the farm. I wont take hay i havent worked for, i know how much my brother can sell it for come winter. More and more of us are getting away from grain. Little clover and alfalfa with a mineral block. People are learning that to mimic nature, animals down gain weight in winter much, but maintaining it is crucial. Then, when the spring grasses arrive, the weight gain is doubled from a corn fed critter. We will grow some corn for the beasties, but its given as a treat, not the entree. If you havent read Joel Salatin your missing tons of great info. Rick,

Oops. Rick, I've never been lucky enough to shoot with a guy with that much long range talent. I've read about Carlos Hathcock, and I'm still in awe at his talent. My .220 had some 16 powered glass. Im a big man, and the smallest of movements on my end of the barrel made for large groups waaaayyy out there. To get proficient with any weapon, i needed practice. Hopefully the mosin will shoot good. The ammo is cheap enough, for sure. Just a swab or two of ammonia to clean up the corrosive nasties before the bore solvent seems to work good. Also, i hate the thought of breaking open a 440 round can of ammo. Looking now in stores for hornady ballistic tipped rounds. Those look to be the best as far as factory loads can be. Too many choices confuse my feeble mind. My buddies dads gunshop has a 700, mcmillan synthetic, semi- bull barrel, Timney trigger, and ziess glass, in .308. I made the mistake of fondling it. Now were madly in love but i just cant afford a high class honey like her. Just the thought of clamping it into my cleaning vise makes my palms sweaty. Must be love! < stands up > Hi, my name is Rick, and I'm a weaponfreakgeek.
