I have heard good things, I just do not trust them, I can buy lids cheap enough. Besides, I write on my lids.

Hey guys do any of you have experience with the Tattler reusable lids? I'm a bit skeptical... They work great, the only big issue is the price. My Grandmother used them almost exclusively from the late 70's up until she stopped canning regularly in the late 90's. I have a few dozen. ~Martin

Andy and I had thought that Tattler lids were only a few years old till we learned the other day they were actually were made in the 70's. Thanks for letting us know Martin, always nice to hear of more people who used them in the 70's. We have the opportunity to purchase lids with a large group of people to get them at a better price. I also looked at the local walmart the other day at canning supplies and found they have went up like a dollar a box on lids. Holy crap. So if the gal gets enough orders we will be able to get a dozen wide mouth lids for like 2.00 a dozen more then the one time use lids at walmart. The regular lids from tattler will be like 3.00 more a dozen (so double the price) of the one time use. Now to decide how much money we want to put into them.

I like that they're re-usable and don't rust the way metal lids do. They just seem to stay cleaner too. Only real disadvantages are the price, as mentioned before, and the fact that they can't be given as gifts. ;D They are used a bit differently than the way most people use metal lids. Lids can't be too tight during canning or steam won't escape. Before canning, tighten the ring and then back it off about a quarter of a turn. Re-tighten the ring when the jars come out of the canner, oven mitts work great for that. Only minor issue I can think of compared to the metal lids is the two piece lid can be a bit of a pain to wrestle with while using up a jar of stuff. No real big deal. I use the plastic storage lids on opened jars, which is somehting I do with the jars that have been sealed with metal lids anyway. Oh, and the lids don't 'ping' while cooling like a metal lid. No big deal. Just a few things I think you should be aware of before you invest the money. ~Martin

Thanks Martin, I think we're going to buy several dozen of both wide mouth and narrow mouth. I'm still kind of leery of them, but if they're as good as you and others say we're gonna be using them for a long time. I still plan to use regular lids for things we will give as gifts as I don't want to have to worry about getting our investment back...
