Been trying to do a little research on solar attic ventilators. We know we have to have one, not necessarily a solar one, but we need to cool the attic down, it puts a big load on the upstairs ac, in fact, I think we could cut the time we need to use the ac by 3/4 if the attic was vented. I used to sell Broan products, and that company is like many, there are two or three models that are used in MOST new home construction, they are good units and dirt cheap, but once you veer from those couple styles offered, price are inflated beyond reason, they make good fans and all, but they are grossly overpriced on most everything else in their line. I stumbled on this one, and you can add another panel if you want to increase CFM. www.tractorsupply.com/ventamatic-solar-powered-roof-attic-ventilator-3240895?ddkey=http%3AClickInfo&evtype=CpgnClick&intv_id=15001&mpe_id=12075&cm_cr=No%20Campaign-_-Web%20Activity-_-Cross%20Sell%20Up%20Sell-_-ProductDetail_Espot1-_-Ventamatic%20Solar%20Powered%20Roof%20Attic%20Ventilator

I looked at some of those, but opted for a powered vent, as I want to move that hot air out right away. The solar one starts spinning with the sun and continues until sundown. Pretty simple, I can't depend on the wind to blow here, except in spring, winter and fall, in the summer you usually can't find a breeze.

Ah, but this one works on the premise that heat rises, not just the wind blowing. The rising heat makes the unit spin. I've installed dozens over the years. We all have to go with what we know, and feel comfortable with. I'm a cheeeeep bastid, and it show's.

Well I like cheap too, but when you consider that Obama gonna give me a 35% tax credit on the solar one, it brings it down to the price of the other unit and extra panels make the fan spin faster.

:oAttic fans are designed to exhaust hot air from the attic. When used properly, they will cool hot attics by pulling in outside air that is cooler and then pushing the hot air outside. 500w solar system will keep the attic ventilated and reduce the temperature in the attic and in the house. In colder climates, the attic fan will help reduce humidity. The attic fan is generally mounted on the roof toward the back of the house and about 2 feet below the peak. I am curious how the solar attic fan work once encountering rainy days?

My attic is aligned almost directly N-S. There is a small 12x36 window at each end. I just put a small box fan blowing out the S window so it draws from the cooler N side. I'm a cheep bastid too!! ;D
