A teacher at my favorite school and I were talking about homesteading. I mentioned that I have to replace the dividing fence in my backyard. The Lab jumps it (which is ok 'cause he doesn't chase chickens) and the Airedale has compressed it to only 2' tall. High enough that he won't jump it, but it needs to be done.
I'm going to put a 4' gate in it instead of whatever is there now. The new wire will be 4' tall, with reinforcing boards at the top and the bottom. There is about 15' on either side of the gate. Al's going to give me some "red cap" cuttings and some "black cap" cuttings.
What I'm thinking of doing is planting the red on one side of the gate and the black on the other side. Then I'll train the brambles on the wire fence, sort of like espaliering grape vines.
The hope is that as they grow in they'll camouflage the fence, provide berries, and that the birds won't strip them of leaves. Does anybody have experience with berries like this? Is it a workable plan? Do you think I need to protect the berries/leaves from the chickens?

Mike, my chickens favorites are any red fruit or veggies. Tomatoes, strawberries, and they love raspberries... I sacrafice some lower berries but my patch is HUGE. I'd be leery in a small patch, myself. Can you do a double fence, say 3' apart? A berry fence, and a chicken fence?

Mike, I have berries the whole length of one side of the back yard. I built a traditional 4-wire trellis for my blackberries and Black Raspberries to do just what you said, the Raspberries though need a T-Bar trellis.
