That article is right on. The part about the internet, just look at the people on this forum, we are from different parts of the country but all have the same mind set and same goals. Makes you have hope that if people band together they can change some things. I too am going to find this mans books and read them.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Salatin on the phone a few times back in the mid-90s when he was first pushing his pastured poultry production model. We used the model for several years producing as many as 1,300 broilers a summer. Here's the "resources" page on his website: www.polyfacefarms.com/library.aspx~Martin

I keep polyface on my desktop. He wrote an article in Acres USA called Mob Grazing that totally blew up all the green grass theories to pieces. I missed a seminar by him last spring by 1 day. I've read all but his newest one, and all of them more than once. Anyone wants to borrow Pastured Poultry Profits, lemme know.
The USDA hates and fears him. I like that in a person.

Very interesting, this man.... "If I could figure out a way to grow kleenex and toilet paper on a tree, we would pull the plug on society". Awesome dude. Thanks Martin and Rick for the links, good readin'.

Salatin is a journalist and a marketer who does what both journalists and marketers do best, which is to sensationalize. He gets the 'mob grazing' idea from Andre Voisin which is best detailed in his book Grass Productivity. The books Greener Pastures on your side of the Fence by Bill Murphy and Holistic Management by Allan Savory both feature Voisin's ideas.

Martin, granted, planned high density grazing has been around forever. But, taking a weed choked overgrown pasture and forcing the grazers to eat what they would normally pass by rejuvinates that soil on a scale that is quite impressive. Most farmers or ranchers would have bush hogged the land first. The weight gains were documented by Charles Walters. Mob grazing was ALWAYS done on lush, green pastures. What I read had to do with fields that had "Gone by". Everyone involved was shocked at the results of both the land and the cattle. It caused quite a stir when the article was published. Look up the article in Acres usa. I think it was last year, maybe '09.

It's the only way to graze, but , in general, people are too lazy to implement it! LOL ~Martin

I'm glad we agree. Your way too smart to argue with! LMAO Moving critters 2 to 3 times a day? Even once....... it won't happen at my brothers place. I could do it here......with rabbits. (small pasture)
