Here's my theoretical question....first off....NO I did NOT win the lottery. Theoretical Question: OK, lets say I won the big one and I wanted to move to an area where I could buy up a bunch of land and invite (Lets see, the current membership of this forum is 27) 26 families to move out to co-locate. This land should be good for growing things, as free from government BS as possible, friendly to firearms possession/carrying, have a very low population density. Any thoughts from the future population (theoretical) on where this area would be? What states or part of states? Fred PS: Now all I gotta do is win the Lottery!

Fred, I think I would look into the South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas states. I think Oklahoma is getting too populated. Although, I don't think there's anywhere that's perfect and fits the all the criteria.

Somewhere with lots of heating degree days, a stream for mini hydro and a nice steady breeze for a small turbine. Fertile soil, tons of wormies, no gubmint bs. Friendly, intelligent neighbors. Sounds like Valhalla. Lol You find it, dont tell anyone, everyone will wanna live there!

My first degree was in Geography and as such I have a sweet spot in my heart for maps and their uses. In fact, that's how I started researching where I would like to find land. I went to the Bureau of Census and downloaded some maps of mean income, population density, population changes among others. Then I cross referenced those with land prices.
Right now I am concentrating on the NE corner of TN, the area around Waynseboro/Wayne County TN, and almost anywhere in MO. And really, the NE corner of TN isn't prime for my criteria unless you throw in the fact that I want to be able to use my two sailboats too.

We have been looking into Arkansas, but they do have some hinky concealed carry law where you have to be a resident for 9 months or somewhere in that range before they will issue you a permit. Real estate prices are good there. Also Kansas isn't bad, but you have to make sure water is available , the eastern part of the state is not bad. South Dakota is good, but the winters can be brutal.

IMO, New England kicks butt. Heres why: 1) all the warmer parts of the country get hammered by weird weather. Flooding, drought, tornadoes, quakes, etc. 2)Soil, like people, need a vacation once in awhile. Winter provides a time out for that, plus many less nasty bugs in the garden. Winter kills many that are a pita in warmer climes. 3) the soil here is incredible. Its THE most important aspect of life for me right alongside water. I can grow more per square foot than most with much less time doing soil ammendments. Books tell you if you have 8 wormies in 1 square foot of soil, you are doing quite well. I have over 3 times that in my gardens. I show every visitor that comes here, and most leave here re-thinking soil life. Most growers consider the soil DIRT, to hold the plant up while they poison both it and themselves with chemicals. Mimic nature, use mulches to both feed your soil and protect it. 4) anyone who has lived where the winter can kill you will knows how satisfying it is to have a large supply of wood put up. To sit in your warm, cozy abode and watch the snow fall. Must be the caveman in me, to know that I'm responsible to keep others in comfort and security. I could write lots more, but my finger is wearing out. I'm staying here. Cant afford to move, anyway! Weeeeee.......

My vote goes to ME, NH or VT, winter yes, but all the things that Rick mentioned, plus, you can really build that house in the woods and have no one bother you above Concord.

The other thing I think NE has going for it over the TN or MO area I was considering is that nobody will be trying to get out of the cities by going north. They'll all be headed for more temperate climes. That's one of the reasons I would consider a very rural area of PA also.

You are right Mike, if you know how to live in the north country, you can be very comfortable and very alone.

Yep, if i were to pack it up and move, I'd go farther north about 50 more miles to an unorganized township.

I gotta say...I NEVER considered New England. Between the population density because of the big cities, and the liberal wacko government, New England is not anywhere on my radar.....but I'll give it a look. The New England Patriots are in Massachusetts...and Massachusetts is responsible for electing some of the biggest slime-balls our Republic has ever known! I can see possibly Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont maybe....is this what you folks mean when you say "NE"? Fred Edited to include: Here is a snapshot of the population density of continental USA. This may be rather scary for some of you. If you want a snapshot of your particular state just let me know and I'll pop one up for you. home.comcast.net/~proud_poppa/pwpimages/Population%20Density.jpg

Fred to me at least New England is north of Concord NH, anywhere north of that parallel you can find a nice quiet, conservative place to live.

Fred, Try Grafton County NH, Specifically North Haverhill NH Here are a couple of pop dens maps for you.....these do not show the influence of Montreal to the north. New England: home.comcast.net/~proud_poppa/pwpimages/New%20England_PopDens.jpgHere's a closeup of North Haverhill: home.comcast.net/~proud_poppa/pwpimages/North%20Haverhill%20NH.jpgI've done a little surfing...and the area looks absolutely beautiful! It is also part of this continent that has been very tectonically stable for several million years....if you believe "science". Though I've never been there I do not doubt that it is a excellent place to live..... as things now stand. However, I do NOT believe that things will be as they have been in the past for much longer. That may be a confusing statement.....in short....I believe we are about to undergo a severe re-alignment of reality. People will attempt to escape from the cities and "head to the hills" as the Bible says. All those people on the north edge of "civilization" will have nowhere to go except north to look for a place to survive. They will "head to the hills"....a place of safety historically. People who live in these areas will be presented with a choice.....try to help these people and end up joining in their starvation....or deny them aide and attempt to defend your homestead. The three scariest words in the English language for a parent is "Daddy, I'm HUNGRY". I do not want to be placed in the position of watching children starve...or killing their parents because they are stealing my tomatoes. My desire is to be so far out in the boonies that I will not be presented with that choice. If there ARE a small amount of people who show up at my doorstep, I hope that I will be able to help them.....rather than kill them. Sorry for the stark dose of reality. I'm not real tickled about it either! Fred
