Wayne, maybe look into some 1/4" fanfold insulation. Works really good at creating that thermal barrier, and will stop all the drafts.

I was going to strip the aluminum siding off and wrap the house in tyvec then cover with 1" blueboard, then vinyl siding over that, plus the 6" of blown in insulation that the lower half of the house is done in.

Extruded polystyrene is R 7.5 to the inch. That will make a HUGE difference. Not real sure you need tyvec with the foam, esp. if you make nice tight seams. Won't be alot of air movement in either direction. I was shooting 'insul- safe' blown- in towards the end of my career, it seemed to have the highest R- value of the blown -in's. But that was 5 years ago. Probably better stuff on the market now. Old houses are a challenge, but you sure notice even the smallest of improvements. Kinda wishing this place was wrapped in kevlar!

We still have a lot of plaster and lathe walls, it seems that the previous owners did insulate when they replace some of the plaster with wall board, but not everywhere, makes it tough to figure. We had the bottom floor done last year, it has made a difference, but as we know, heat rises, so once all that nice heat from the stove makes it to the second floor, the 100 year old windows and lack of wall insulation leaves a lot to be desired. I am totally sure that replacing the windows upstairs and getting the walls blown in I could blast us out of here with heat.

Living in AZ and dealing with heat and low humidity we have decided to dehydrate all the food we can both meat and vegetables. Last night we dehydrated our first 5lb bag of mixed carrots, peas , green beans. After dehydrating for 12 hours one 5lb bag fit in a quart size canning jar. There is another 5lb bag of mixed vegetable in the dehydrator now and we are doing a test of 'Normandy Mixed' vegetables as well... We are checking to see if we have to slice the cauliflower and broccoli or if they will dry properly right out of the bag.
We are also going to be dehydrating chicken, beef and a bunch of fruit as well. We already have a lot of apples, peaches and strawberries, but we're going to increase all of that.

I've been dehydrating too Andy. I am taking cans of fruit that are near their expiration date and drying them. The syrup makes a thin sugary coating on the fruit that's good for pocket snacks. I think stuff is getting ready to hit the fan with Egypt and the middle east so time is short.

I'll have to go find some instructional vids on dehydrating chicken. Sounds like a good plan. If you were ever forced to leave home for whatever reason, sure would be easier carrying food that way. Plus, not many would recognize it for what it was.

Bought some more stashables, be the last for awhile until I get some income.
Big bags of flour, sugar and rice. 1 each. 8 pounds of dried beans and chick peas. Peanut butter dehydrated taters 3 small bags of brown rice. large jar of granulated garlic
Eagerly awaiting the return of the pigs from the butcher. We're gonna wait until the smoking is all done before going to get any. Its 35 miles one way. We're also having sausage made, and they know how its done. It is REALLY good. Not a big pork eater, with the exception of loins. I love it, but eat it sparingly. 1/2 is destined for the smoker and then the pressure canner. THAT will give me some peace of mind. Gonna try to do a bunch in jelly jars, to be added to rices and pastas for WTSHTF, just so it lasts longer. I hope it does, anywho.

I tried my hand at drying eggs. Left them on the table and went outside. When I came back in the cat that has been hanging around here was on the table. I am madder than a wet hen. Why doesn't he go up to the barn. He acts like a city cat, always wants in the house and hangs around the door and mounces and begs. I got 128 eggs in the refrigerator and would like to prepare them for keeping, just in case.

I bought two food safe buckets and crammed as many powdered milk packets in them as I could. I have the bigger boxes also but I thought I'd make more room on my shelf by taking the boxes with the 2 qt packets in them down. I had gone online and checked my food storage program and found that I was lacking in enough milk, so I've been buying a box each week at the store. I also started some more seeds today-put the others that have already sprouted in the cold frame. They did OK today-we'll see what happens tonight. Gotta go clean that pantry room tomorrow-don't even want to tell you how bad it is down there after the kids made their restaurant.....

;D That's funny.
I have read where some of the powdered milk is really bad. Julie or anyone know of a brand that is drinkable ? I need to do this too.
