This is copied from mennonitegirlscancook.blogspot.com/We are now using this recipe, and it saves you a ton of money. You can buy the ingredients to make 50 GALLONS for $9.50, it works every bit as well if not better than store bought which last time I looked was costing us about $14 a month....that is one bill I don't have any more. ;D 1 Fels Naptha or sunlight bar grated into a medium saucepan * 4 cups hot tap water * 1 cup Washing Soda * 1/2 cup Borax * 1 five gallon pail 1. Melt the Fels Naptha orSunlight bar over medium heat . . stirring the whole time. 2. Dump it into a 5 gallon pail and add the Washing Soda and the Borax. Stir well. 3. Add hot water to the pail to come to a few inches to the top of the pail. 4. Stir well. ( I use a broom handle) 5. Let sit overnight and give it a good stir. It will jell a bit. 6. Fill empty laundry soap containers. 7. For my front load washer I use 1/4 cup. 8. For top load washers you will use closer to 1/2 cup.

I use this recipe also!
It does save a lot of money-I haven't figured my savings out yet, but with a family of five, I'm sure it's huge.

I have been making the powder kind of detergent, but this one sounds so much better. Have to go to town today so will pick up what I don't have to make it..
Thanks

I was really impressed with how bright and more comfortable the clothes were. When I checked out the discharge from the washer I thought, "oh boy, no steady stream of suds, like with Tide, this is going to suck"....I was happily wrong, the clothes were cleaner I thought, and I couldn't have been happier after my OCD got the better of me and I did a yearly comparison on the two, and realized a BIG chunk of money saved.

Suds do not get your clothes clean-the agitation does. Sudsing agent was only added in the 40's as a marketing ploy to get women to believe their particular laundry detergent worked better than the competitions because the could SEE the cleaning action.
This laundry detergent is also better for your septic tank.
MY SIL made the detergent for the first time recently and she is so thrilled with it. Her BIL was there for a stay and promptly did HIS laundry in it. They all love it, especially since her husband has sensitive skin and she had to buy the expensive kind of laundry detergent so that he didn't break out. Another marketing ploy. Why should something cost more when they have taken ingredients OUT?
No added color, no perfumes, yet it costs more.

And there you have it, I would have been easily marketed to that, since I already decided myself that it wasn't going to be as clean, because of no suds...see how we become conditioned by mass media input?...scary.

As an FYI my wife says you can substitute any mild soap for the Fels Naptha. She uses the Fels Naptha when it's available in our area, however she said it's becoming harder and harder to find.

A friend of mine uses Ivory soap and she says it works fine.
