Man it's good to see you back Rick. Boogers got everybody or sumthin'. Jus me an Martin lately, an I feel bad about keepin him up too long, I know he's hurtin too. Yea, you need a machine, that's for sure. Front sights. Well, been there too. Ruger Super Blackhawk, 44 Mag. an a blind man. Tried poster paint (BRITE ERNGE) was good till gun oil got it. Gone. Tried regular paint, same thing. Tried some of the orange sticky back circles that the meat markets use on meat wrappings for prices, GOOD GLUE on there, lasts for quite awhile, and cheeep to replace. They will slip you a few, surely. ...good luck. Just cut a few little strips and wrap it from one side, across the back of the blade, and around the other side. I didn't need anything on the back sight, but you might. I'd try it with tape on the front and see how it goes. Now there is some sight paint for that, but it ain't cheeep an prolly no better n reg. paint. If you can't get meat stickies, gun shop has some for small targets, but the glue isn't quite as good, and they last awhile.

Thanks! I knew you'd have a cheap alternative to gunsite paint. I thought about lightpipes, too. Those show up really good. Paint/ stickers for now. Orange sounds better than white. I tried highliter with clear nail polish. So far so good. I use nail polish instead of loctite. Im a cheap bastid. Weeeeeeeee............... Next time I go to the meat store, I'll ask for some stickerators.

I like the meat sticker idea... heard of using nail polish, but I think I'll see if I can get a couple of the stickers at the meat shop.

I was a VERY bad boy this afternoon! I went "cruising" at my favorite gun shop, just to see what they had.
Picked out a nice Henry H001 .22LR that I may buy for my DGS, $250 new.
Then I played around with a parkerized Ruger 10/22-T and I'll be darned if it didn't follow me home!! The muzzle mics out at 15/16". It brought a few friends with it too; an 10 rd magazine, scope rings, and a Tasco World Class 3-9.
MSRP is $499, Cabela's price is $449, and I paid $356. I can't wait to get this little beauty to the range and see what she'll do!

Congrats, Mike! Woohoo, your gonna love it! You have the .920 barrel on that, I believe, and the improved trigger. For fun, to see how much you could spend, check out volquartsen. Kaaaaa---ching!! Maybe 6 years back, i picked up a 10/22, put over 10,000 down the pipe. Bought a shiloh(?) barrel, composite stock, hammer and sear. And a 4- 16 scope. Next thing ya know, there goes that grand. Wicked addictive. For me anywho. Oh, and check out my dream gun at magnum research, its called a magnum lite. Nice!

I second what Rick said. The 10/22 is a sweet little gun!
Although the more I shoot my new Marlin 795 the more I like it.

Looks just like a 10/22 cept for the mag. You gonna scope it ? Oh, googled it to see an they have a place to download an owners manual if you didn't get one : www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/SelfLoading/795.asp I had a 10/22 and really liked it, but for dead on accuracy it never came close to my Granpa's old Sears (by Marlin) tube loader. I put a 3-9 on it and it is tight. If times really get bad, that WILL be my "meat" gitter. ;D real quiet head/neck shots will do it. I love BIG guns, especially hand cannons, but 22's are a hoot too. Oh, I have a plastic one...semi 15 shot.. aluminum bore liner that looks like a joke, but that sucker will shoot too. Even at 100yds it was tight. Can't remember the make of it.

Rick, ima gonna guess you have whats called a nylon 66. Nothing beats my old single shot, pull back on the bolt rear to bring back the firing pin, its a springfield model 15. For fun, or wabbit hunting, I'll take my 10/22 with 3-9, and see thru rings. I have my open sighted sporter that is very accurate. 2 nights ago I spied a rooster beating on a hen. As bad as my eyes are getting, he died with a mini mag to his mini brain. Marlin has like 16 grooves, they call micro grooves. Very accurate by todays standards. I got a WMR bolt, tube fed, model 783, been with me almost 20 years, with my bro. Maybe 15 before that. Its the gun i grab for any varmint, we get along real well together.
Problem is, they all call out to me, "take me home!" i feel bad for them that i cant. For them, yeah. Right. Weeeeeee....

RacerRick, You know how to pick 'em, that Sharps Buffalo rifle would be my choice too.
RickH, I grew up with and learned to shoot on a Nylon 66 in .22 lr. It's in the gun cabinet now. Currently it has an ejector problem. The local gunsmith tells me the part isn't available anymore so I'm just biding my time until I can afford to have it made.

(contented sigh)Aaah, Quigley. One of the best darned movies ever made. I've probably watched that even more than Silverado, and that's going some. Yeah, Rick, I'd probably buy that Quigley Sharps if I could just figure out a justification for it. See, I'm not a very good hunter. Was never trained as a kid. Just sort of take my rifle out and walk around the game lands. In fact, that's what I'll be doing for late muzzle season here in PA. 'Bout the only thing I can consistently score are squirrels. Although I will be looking for bunnies this year too. I'll be very interested to see how that little 10/22 shoots because right now I use my father's old Mossberg Model 42B and it is wicked accurate. I made a concession to old age and bought a scope for it last year. Drive my nephew crazy beating him at the range all the time. He's got a scoped 10/22 with a Harris bipod and thinks he's good. Of course, like all kids, he's more interested in how fast he can put 10 in the target than in how small his group is. So his semi-auto 10/22 always beats my bolt. But now I have a semi-auto to play with too! LOL Is it wrong to take such pleasure in beating him? I'll be honest, I think I'm the reason he's becoming a Marine instead of going into the Army like his Grandad was. He's tickled pink that his uncle was a Marine sniper. I have tried to explain to him that I never got to go to the school. The only reason I was a "sniper" was because I was the best shot in my regiment. So they took away my M-16 and gave me a Remington 700. I'd probably own one of those too, if I could think of a good reason for it. My missus doesn't blink an eye at any handgun I buy, since I carried OTJ for all those years and still do. But she raises Cain when I drool over long guns.

My old Sears once in awhile has a problem getting rid of an empty case too. I found that it was trying to tell me that it needed a little better cleaning than it had been recieving. Imagine that ! Don't know if maybe today's powder is a bit more nasty or not, but right under the extractor seems to get dirty sooner than I would like, as it is not the easiest place to clean, so I looked for alternatives in cleaning, rather than disassembly. Almost any form of compressed air, oil, seemed to help. I don't like wd-40 in a weapon, but in a pinch, that would even help. Of course it attracts more dirt rapidly, but anyway. a buddy used to have a small, portable 12v tire pump with a tiny squirt nozzle and we would hook it up to his truck battery, and shazammm, (my gun infected his with the same disease ) instant crud removal. At the range of course. Wouldn't wanna drag a 12v batt and the comp. out into the woods ! ;D Of course the fact that it prolly has shot a truckload of ammo in it's lifetime couldn't have anything to do with it. PS. I like your new hat Andy ;D PSS Since we have 2 ricks, it's fine with me to go by jus plain rr, and that way Rick H can be the Rick. That would be a little easier for you guys to type. Whatever suits you all's fine with me.

Although I will be looking for bunnies this year too. Yea ! Meto on the Quig movie ! Had an old friend who owned a gun shop years ago and he had several Sharps. Man I loved those things, he used to let me borrow one at a time for a few weeks cause he know I'd return it spotless, and take another one. He passed while I was living in another town and I don't have a clue where they reside now. Beat the nephew ? No sir, you are his guage, how else can he measure his progress ? Learned that early on in racing. Most ppl want to be out front, but one learns nothing out front. We only learn behind someone better. Hope his bip-od mounts on the stock, I've seen so many of them attached with barrel clamps and the ppl wondered why they couldn't hit anything. And agreed on helping him become a Marine. It don't get any better than that ! Long guns. Well, you might hate me for this, but here goes. I HAD many extremely accurate long guns, and loved mostly T/C Contenders in rifle calibers. Thot one time I was washed up and sold them ALL. Now, I am lost, and desperately looking for a substitute for REALLY cheeep. I won't settle for anything less than extreme accuracy. How does one do this ? I have researched and found that the old Mosin Nagents are that accurate, but are plagued with the straight bolt handle. Mchagen on BWH came up with an idea to put a long eye relief handgun scope on his Mosin, and THAT is the solution to the scope and the straight bolt thing at the same time ! As you prolly know, they are still so plentiful, they are super cheeep, also they are so ugly only the knowing are interested in them. So that is my plan, to find one with a good bore, strip the wood off the barrel, float and bed it, and put a Burris 4-12 LER scope on it and shazamm, instant super cheeep sniper rifle. Plus it would be a hoot to build it, and different too. Also MLSRP ammo is reasonable. whaddya think ? RickH just aquired one but I know he won't get shut of it ! Man, I goofed that up - posted right in the middle of yours ! sorry

rr, believe it or not, I was gifted a Sako once. A firend of mine had just gotten his FFL and ordered a batch out of Shotgun News for a bargain price, something like $50 each for at least 6 rifles. Knowing me to be more knowledgeable than he was he called me over to the house to help him grade them out. He had orders from guys we worked with at the prison. I put them in order from best (1) to worst (6) so he'd know who to give which one to. He kept the best for himself and then gifted me the second one. Both of ours had all matching serial numbers (upper receiver, lower receiver, and barrel), his stock was in slightly better condition than mine. Did a little research. It's a Model 29 Sako built in 1930, the same model the King of Sweden used to take a gold medal in the Olympics with. It is also a 7.62 x 54R cartridge. Been thinking of sporterizing it like you described. Would make a heck of a hunting rifle if I could find hunting ammo for it instead of that "brown paper & string" surplus ammo. even thought about getting it re-chambered once, naw, too much money to spend on this old relic.

Wow ! Thas unbelievable, for even an old dog, for $50, man. Yea, I've read about them too, but today you'll pay a bunch more for one of those, and just as you say, they are super accurate. That's a good idea Mike. Nothing is more fun than to beat some of the BIG money boys with a piece of carp. Had a guy throw a brand new rem 700 bull bbl with mil high dollar glass in the DIRT and stomp on it one time. We had a shoot at 200 yds and I took the money with a T/C 14" bull bbl, in 223. I used to roll my own and spent weeks and months working up loads for all my stuff. That's the way to go now. Had a 7-30 Waters, (wildcat round), 223, and a 375 Win, all for the T/C. You reload ?
That sako should be a beaut Mike. Another good thing about a cheeepy is you don't hafta sweat gettin a nick or something like that. Those things are built tuff.
