I don't know how many of you get the MSN news links to articles so I am going to put this link in here for you to read if you are interested. It's a great article because it addresses more food issues then just urban gardens. It lightly promotes preparedness and self reliance with a nice liberal touch ! Everytime I see someone teach others, or encourage them, on how to be self-reliant, it gives me hope that there will be one less hungry family for the rest of us to worry about... which in turn gives us one more soldiering family to march forward. Fresh off the Urban Farm Cities are making admirable efforts to cultivate urban food programs and public gardens to promote both local food security and sufficiency. ... If some sort of natural disaster or terrorist attack were to shut down New York City's food supply chain, our supermarket shelves would reportedly be picked clean within three days. Other U.S. cities aren't any better prepared for such emergencies, thanks to our fuelish dependence on a globalized food system. So my husband Matt keeps a bin filled with tins of sardines under the bed in our sardine tin-sized Manhattan apartment. Plus two cans of organic vegetarian chili, and a Kelp Krunch sesame energy bar. He's on a self-sufficiency kick, too; makes his own vanilla extract, sauerkraut, duck rillette, and cat food. I guess we'll be in pretty good shape if calamity comes a-callin'...local.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=25750327

Great Article!!!
My Town three years ago passed "The Right to Farm" bylaw which is VERY similar to what is going on in those cities. We love it. Home gardens, raising chickens and other small livestock has exploded. We now have a Farmer's Market where locals can sell their home grown stuff. The tourists are bewildered especially when they see peacocks wandering around the Teaticket shopping center. We actually ALLOW people to have chickens? What gives? Ha!

That is a great article - thanks for sharing. People will come to thinking about their food supply and self reliance in their own time and their own way. It can't be forced. Every step in that direction is fantastic, when the liberal beauracracy catches up with them then they will get it.
It's a great time to get into the business of providing local produce.
