I got a combination of 5 kinds of perrenial onions and got them planted today. Perrienial onions come up every year so this bed will be a permanent one.
I got Egyptian Walking Onions which form bulbs on the top of stems instead of the bottom! I also got Multiplier onions which are also planted in the fall. Next fall they will have many small satellite bulbs that I can dig up and then plant the seedling bulbs for next year.
I got some French Red shallots, some white and yellow perrenial onions and some perrienial leeks (also known as ramps) which I am very interested in growing.
There is room still in that 4 by 8 raised bed to put in some chives in a corner too. The bed is just off the north side of the house but still gets lots of sun in the afternoons. It should be a good place for an onion patch.

It's funny-I've had the Egyptian walking onions in my perennial beds for years and never knew they were edible. I just thought they were a neat oddity! Silly me!

Did you have to open the onion sets and let them start to sprout before you planted them? I had the type that you were supposed to and I didn't so they got soggy in the ground and didn't do anything - I hate learning the hard way Are you going to add any big sweet onions like vadalias or walla wallas?

That is probably why I could never grow onions in Washington. ;-)
No instructions on these but since they are in good potting soil and it's not soggy at all here I think it will be fine. Some of them were sprouted slightly already.
