What kind of potatoes Martin? Our Red Nordlands are awesome in everything except mashed, Lynn doesn't care for them, she says too pasty....I have already decided that I am going to plant more varieties of potatoes this year, I am going to put some Yukons in for doing mashed.

Chieftan (or Chieftain), another red....they've long been one of my favorite all-purpose taters. Very dependable, especially in our heavy soils. Decent flavor....good fried, boiled, mashed or baked. ~Martin

I'm having a hard time deciding what to have Christmas day. Steak or Lasagna???........maybe both! LOL
Either way, we'll have ham, that's a must for me. I'm going to cure and smoke a couple small cottage hams.

I will try some of those Chieftans next year.
I prefer Turkey for Christmas but we will probably end up over at Lynn's parents and that means Ham.

I grow yukons here, they seem to do pretty well-the reds I forget which one does the best in our soil. Kennebec may be? I've been loading the garden with chicken poop so hopefully our soil will be outrageous next year. I've also been letting the girls wander the fenced in vegi garden area so between their scratching should help too. We're having a small group-11-for Christmas dinner so I am doing prime rib again. Turkey is nice but we get sick of having it so much. We found another fridge/freezer on craigslist so I am very happy that we have the extra again. Fridge on the top freezer on the bottom-10 years old and it works great! Not bad for 140.00 no? It was still in the guys house and it was immaculate. I LOVE craigslist.

Well, the natural gas idiots managed to destroy my uncles property, and he's nobody to mess with!! LOL
He works as a contract critical care nurse away from home much of the time. They cut a good share of his woods down and then paid the neighbor for the timber!!! LOL They destroyed their spring, but they have finally agreed to drill them a well after supplying them with water for several months. The nice little run they live on is not so nice anymore! He's trying to get the gas company to buy the house, nobody else in their right mind would buy it now. Used to be a VERY nice place!
Please PRAY that this doesn't come to your area, it's destroying ours!

Good deal Julie!!
Martin, it's horrible that a resource that could be gotten with low impact is being extracted in this manner and that the little guy is suffering, probably without recourse.
Lately the pen sales have been down. It was to the point that we were considering discontinuing selling at the farmers market we've been going to. Saturday we went out and it started slow but we ended up having the biggest sales day ever. I have to make more pens now. After the first of the year we're going to go down to Bisbee to sell at a market there. It will be a bit of a drive but we hear good things about it.

Yes, domestic energy looks good on paper and it's thought that everybody should be dancin', high-fivin', huggin', kissin' and partyin'! ...honey, sweety, cutey and other BS! The reality is much different! All these companies care about is themselves! I can't count the number of ways it's changed this area! Literally EVERYTHING has changed!! It's not pretty! The insurance company dumped the insurance on my property because of the higher liability of having the gas BS in the area, I can't get insurance now! I could lose everything! I don't know what to do! And that's just ONE thing that's gone to hell! What an evil world we live in!!! ~Martin

Martin, That really sucks, I am sorry you folks are getting taken for a ride, down here it is just the opposite, I haven't heard one complaint from anyone that is having a problem. I am sure they must exist, but I haven't heard anything, the pipeline corridor they carved through the state is hardly noticeable any more. Sounds like you guys have fly by nighters screwing up the works. I hope there is a silver lining somewhere in here for you.

Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobile, Chesapeake, etc. The 2 well pads closest to me are Shell. ~Martin

Andy, great news on the sales. My mother and I used to do the craft shows (seasonally) where I grew up in NY. Funny thing, one of our best sellers, sold out virtually every show, were "Polish Flyswatters". We'd take a 50¢ 2x4x8' and cut it into 16-6" pieces. Then I'd use a wood burner and burn "Polish Flyswatter" into the good face. People would ask how they were used. I'd take one in each hand and clap them together like I was chasing flies. After they stopped laughing, they'd almost always spend the 50¢ to buy one or even a pair. LOL, there's one born every minute! Mom tried to "maximize our profits once and cut them to only 4" long. Sales plummeted. They'd gladly spend 50¢ for a 6" dust collector, but not for a 4" one. Go figure.
Martin, just a silly question, but why bother getting the insurance at all? In my opinion, insurance is nothing more than legalized gambling intended to make some shyster rich. If I didn't have a mortgage on this place I wouldn't bother having insurance either. But that's just me. If the law is not going to stand up and back you by requiring the insurance company to sell insurance, well then they can't very well require you to have any either.
ROUGH DAY today! I got called to substitute for an American Government teacher. But I lucked out. The topic today was something I was actually able to speak intelligently on, the Anti-Federalist resistance to the ratification of the original constitution, the one they wrote BEFORE the Bill of Rights was added. Great timing because every kid in the classes will be eligible to vote next year. But still a really rough teach for someone like me. Why? Do you have any idea how hard it was to teach this subject and NOT interject my own political beliefs, which is illegal by the way. On the other hand, it was fascinating to see the parallels between then and now. I was able to draw parallels between the Anti-Federalists, the Confederacy, the Tea Party, the Libertarians, and the "Occupation" movement. To be honest, I'm not sure I stayed completely legal, but I think I did. I never indicated my personal beliefs or who I would support. But I made sure those kids understood that the very things the Anti-Federalists were afraid of and resisted back then are still things to be feared and resisted today.
