Back when I was still on-duty most of my friends and acquaintances carried some version of a .40. I selected a Sig P229. I still turn to that pistol occasionally in the winter but most of the time nowadays I'll reach for my S&W Model 65 revolver in .357 (3 inch) or my Ruger SP101 (2 inch). I carry two speed strip reloads in a pocket and I'm good to go. If I need more than 18 rounds I need to be getting the hell out of Dodge anyway. I subscribe to the theory that it doesn't matter how many rounds you throw down range if you don't hit your opponent. These are both pistols I will routinely shoot 390's or better on a 420 course of fire, over 90%. Thanks to the Public Safety Officers Act of 2004, I get to carry concealed, nationwide. I originally bucked at the idea of having to shoot for qualification each year because the cost is coming out of my pocket. Then I figured "What the heck, I'm at the range often enough anyway." And besides, it's a chance to hang out with fellow officers. It's a sense of camaraderie you just won't find around the water cooler. Interesting little tid-bit about PA, and maybe where you live as well, unless you live in the People's Democratic Republics of MA, NY or CA. You don't need a CCW to carry a pistol in PA, as long as you wear out in the open.

In Arizona it legal to carry open or carry concealed without a CCW. I keep the CCW because the paper cuts down on background check time. I've carried my XD .45 for about 3 years now, I have a Crossdraw Supertuck that I use to carry on the belt off the belt I have a Maxpedition bag that I use as a concealed carry platform that holds extra ammo and a small bit of bug out items.

This is what I currently carry, but like I said, a little heavy and bulky in certain situations. This is what Lynn carries, her is in 9MM, I want the same thing in .40 We both have CCW, and we take our weapons with us wherever we go. I still don't think there is much that can be argued about "...shall NOT be infringed..." no matter who says it.

It's not exactly in keeping with our usual topics but I'm feeling a little self-satisfied tonight.
Rewind to January 2009: It's coming up on Super Bowl Sunday and our tv craps out. So I went to Best Buy and invested in a flat screen, I think it was a 36". Wound up buying a surround sound system at the same time. Now Candice was an electronics tech in the Air National Guard and her husband, although not of much use back then was at least young and nimble. So I got the two of them to install the surround sound and do all that wiring.
Flash to just before Christmas 2009: Some of our favorite Christmas movies were still on VHS and all I had was DVD. So I went out and bought a VHS/DVD combo. Good thing to because my DVD in the surround sound system was starting to act weird.
Just before Christmas 2010: The flat screen craps out, and silly me, I forgot I had paid for an extended warranty on it. Went to China-Mart and bought a 42" LG that is still working fine.
Which brings me to Friday. The DVD in the surround sound system fails to function about 75% of the time and wouldn't load our "The Santa Clause" movie. We made do with the combo unit. Saturday morning I went to watch one of my Star Trek dvd's and the combo unit crapped out. And worst of all it wouldn't give me back my dvd. So I drove to China-Mart (it's half the distance to Best Buy). There were 5 people at the register in electronics having a "smoke and joke". They pointed me to the surround sound systems but nobody offered to help me or to show me exactly where they were. After waiting a few minutes to see if any of them were going to help me I decided to drive the extra distance, but not before I got a hold of the manager and told her exactly what I thought of her electronics staff and why. The tiles were smoking as she headed off in that direction.
When I explained what was going on at Best Buy the guy told me, "Well, I'm really not the best person to help you with this. Let me go get somebody who really knows this home theater stuff." Hmm, nice start. Then the lady asks me some questions and tells me that i don't have to buy a new system because of the extended warranty I had forgotten about. She even printed out a duplicate receipt for me to use to get the system fixed/replaced. So I carried that in to BB today. they have to ship it to NYC for repair, and that'll be 4-6 weeks. Well, that just won't do! How are we supposed to watch Christmas dvd's? the GeekSquad kid lowered his voice and told me "We have an extended return policy because of the holidays. You can get something for now and then return it when they send your repaired unit back. But I didn't tell you that."
So I went back to get a cheap unit. But I don't know anything about them. The dept mgr hooks me up with some kid who "knows his stuff". After a few questions the kid points me to a Samsung, the new model of the system I've been using. He even hooks up his cell phone to the thing so I can hear the tone. Nice, he listens to Boston, not hip-hop. And that was when I made my mistake. I asked why I would pay twice as much for the system next to it. He told me the tone was a LOT better, but since I was just looking for a cheap set that the first one would do all I wanted it to. I asked how much nicer it sounded. So he hooked up to it and showed me. Yeah, I guess it sounded better. Then he switched back to the first one. WOW!! Did it sound cheap and tinny! So this kid sold me a bigger system that I will be keeping, even if they offer me a new Samsung system. Of course, it's only an amplifier, so I had to buy a dvd player to go with it, but boy does it sound nice. Even Cindy can tell the difference between the old one and this new one. Guess I'll give the Samsung unit to the kids in Kansas.
Oh, the self-satisfied part? It took me six hours but this old fart managed to install the entire system this afternoon, including hanging new speakers and running new speaker wires through the ceiling. Now my dvd's, my cable, and Cindy's Wii all play through the surround sound and sound fantastic. A few false starts here and there but I figured them out. Can't wait to hear the football games tomorrow. Of course, now I have to build a decent entertainment center to house it and all those dvd's.

Yeah, I was kidding about the Food Network, although I do like Alton Brown....I've learned some interesting things from him. ~Martin
