I am really blessed in that! He was a plumber for 15 years, then when our plumbing company went under in the early 90's, he started framing houses. He built houses for about 8 years until he started at the Oceanographic. The Contractor's business is hell when money isn't coming in-i.e., customers not paying their bills. That got really old. He built our house-plumbed it, did all the trim work etc etc etc! The only thing he didn't do was the electrical. We saved HUGE money by him doing everything-we have the house we do because of it- He can pretty much make something out of nothing-again, I am blessed!!!!

Here is a pic from this morning-decided to make the right hand front panel fixed so that we can put a window in. Still some more latches and locks to go, plus make the nest box-which is now going on the side that you can see-James found a 30" piano hinge for the top lid so each box inside will be 15" wide-so two boxes-enough for eight chickens- Oh yeah, the guy who was giving us the chickens? He gave them away to a farm-NICE. Oh well-we're just going to get our own then!

Excellent!! I like it, I dabble with wood, but those are the kinds of projects that make me most happy. Great job James!! There are lots of chickens available, and now you can be sure of what you are getting and get what you want.

James rally likes the looks of the barred rocks-so maybe we'll get a mixed bag of girls. I'll let him know that you like it It's funny-every year at the fair one of the things I take pictures of are the chickens. I have some great rooster pics of the show guys they bring. Even though we are only getting girls, roosters fascinate me-I think they can be gorgeous!

One of my neighbors has chickens and a rooster, it is nice to hear once in a while, but this stupid rooster cock-a-doodle-dos ALL DAY LONG!! From sun-up to sundown that thing is cutting loose, still better than hearing traffic etc.

Very very nice. Was looking at a Boer doe yesterday, and they had 2 bantam pullet roosters, just getting their combs and wattles. Wicked frickin cute.

A beautiful job. Kudos to James. 2 boxes is just barely enough for 8 girls. I usually like to keep mine to 3 hens per box. Is the tower 3' across? If so, you could put three bpxes across it, just make them 16" to deep.
Also, Jules from the way you are admiring them, I'd consider one rooster, just for show. Pick a breed that you really like and give one a try. No more than one rooster for at least 10 hens, so in your case only one for now. But watch out! they're addictive.

Great coop, I am partial to buff orphingtons, they just have always been my favorite. nothing better than a fresh egg.
